Two modern explorers of electronic rock share their travels today with Depeche Mode’s “Black Celebration” & KMFDM “Nihil”.
Depeche Mode paints a vivid electro ambient dream of darkness and sensuality. Life is fragile and so are we, so give into your senses and lose yourself through indulgence. Soft and sensitive beings longing for deep emotional connection to share deepest darkest secrets in a safe place. Sensitivity comes with an edge however, with songs like “Question of Time” and “Stripped” with feelings for underage lust, and wanting someone raw and unpolished. If “Black Celebration” was a movie, I would compare it to “American Beauty”. We are weak and confused with longing for acceptance of our unacceptable nature.
On “Nihil”, the freaks come out at night, or anytime they feel like it. The atmospheric vibe Depeche Mode created is shattered with a brutal electronic metal dance floor massacre. Here, society is weak and we are strong stressing individuality and excess through liberation without shame. We are not looking for someone to share our secrets, we are looking to share pain and sin as KMFDM says, “Brutalize me, I will heal.” Sonically and lyrically this will give you all the confidence you need to get nasty. If this was a movie, “Natural Born Killers” could be appropriate. Evolve and embrace your nature for the world is weak and we are strong
