When Grunge Meets Gumbo

“Do Your Thing” by Papa Mali could have been called “Fear and Loathing in New Orleans”. It is a fun ride through alcohol, psychedelics, uppers, downers, and “yes” raw ether!  Party with “Early in the Morning”, and trip out with “Little Moses”. A perfectly planned drug binge where even the darkest moments are a blast.

“Dirt” by Alice in Chains would be more like the “Basketball Diaries “ shift from casual user to full blown addict. “Them Bones” starts where “Do Your Thing” left off.  The party is officially over and the fair weather friends have migrated elsewhere.  The playfulness of Papa Mali is met with the harsh reality of “Rain When I Die” and “Down in a Hole”. A night on the town has been followed by a lifetime of clinics , institutions, and feelings of isolation.  A real roller coaster ride between the two albums.
