Alot of artists try that “I’m so weird, it must be good” kinda thing. However, Mr Bungle’s “California” and Diablo Swing Orchestra’s “The Butcher’s Ballroom” are two albums that are so strange, they’re even better. “California” begins on a sandy beach grooving to Brian Wilson’s familiar harmonies. Soon, out comes the rabbit hole, and away we go. “White Rabbit” now echoes from the boom box while the mad hatter gives surf lessons to the lollipop guild. Songs like “None of Them Knew They Were Robots” and “Goodbye Sober Day” really showcase Mike Patton’s vocal range, where David Lynch seemingly takes the reigns throughout “Pink Cigarette”. The worlds of Brian Wilson and David Lynch both coexist and clash throughout the album, causing a masterpiece of harmonies and insane imagery.
“Balrog Boogie” follows a medieval tribe of satanic opera singers whose musical influence is the marriage of Mozart and Pee Wee Herman. As crazy as that sounds, and is, it really works. The musical skill of Mozart somehow entered the bizarre world of Pee Wee Herman. Vocals range from opera to rock, backed with the attitude of a flamenco thrash band. Hell brought forth some cool cats who brought forth the inside workings of the occult. If you can show me two albums that are this entertaining and cover this much musical ground combined, please let me know. Until than double dip in the well of the strange and unusual worlds of Mr. Bungle and Diablo Swing Orchestra.
